|Language and literature|| We have been analysing different speeches this fortnight. We watched one speech delivered by a Canadian teenager at the UN assembly and another by Trevor Noah. The former spoke on a serious issue of lost voices of the underprivileged children and animals whose habitats are being threatened. She spoke for her generation’s future. The latter spoke on being a ‘mixed’ breed in South Africa during the times of apartheid. We analysed the language used by both speakers and how they used linguistic tools to create an effect on their audience. We have taken our summative assessment on Unit 1.
We have also been introduced to our next unit, A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen. Through a Gallery walk we were introduced to the social and historical context of this play. Our mid-term break homework will be a webquest based on this activity.

|Math||In the past two weeks, we have finished the first unit of term 2 – Geometry of 3D shapes. We recently had our summative assessment in which we were required to use our knowledge and transfer it to real life problems. We were tested on surface area and volume. We have also started the unit in trigonometry and discussed the basic information about the triangle and the use of Pythagoras theorem.

Last week we finished the presentations on stars and our solar system. The presentations looked at different types, properties and formation of stars, all the planets in our solar system, the law of gravitation and Kepler’s law. After finishing the presentations, we explored the latter in more depth.
We discussed the three laws of Kepler: the shape of a planet’s orbit, time and area of orbit, and the relationship between the time of orbit and the semi-major axis of the elliptical orbit.
Furthermore, we learned how to calculate the gravitational force between two objects and solved a few practice questions which helped us in understanding the concept.

The last two weeks in chemistry were about exploring new concepts and giving informative presentations on organic compounds. The presentations talked about the properties of an organic compound and its applications too. Secondly, we discussed the physical properties of Alkanes and learned about the relationship between inter-molecular forces and physical properties of Alkanes. Furthermore, we started with the general formula of Alkenes and were briefed about various types of unsaturated compounds and their uses in forms of polymers, such as polythene and polypropylene.
We were introduced to the new unit – ‘Green Canopy’, and had a brainstorming session on how to relate the Global Context, Key concept and Related concept with the unit. After that, we created the statement of inquiry.
We had a practical, where we mounted the stomata from the lower epidermis of a dicot leaf. We also learnt how to differentiate between a monocot and a dicot by their roots, seeds, leaves and the multiples of flower petals. Thereafter, we had our second formative assessment on Criteria B and C, where we investigated the difference in stomata of a monocot and a dicot leaf.

Hindi Phase 2
Under our unit, ‘Festivals and Traditions’, we discussed the importance and relevance of festivals in present day.
We answered unit-based questions in writing and wrote articles on the topic of the extent to which a festival should be celebrated – in moderation or with grandeur. We utilized our time for a group task, where each group was assigned a festival, for example Eid, Diwali, Holi or Christmas. The groups wrote short descriptions and presented them. We learnt about the forms of [kaal, ling, vachan] and gave examples. We also had Samvaad lekhan and dialogue writing practice in class. We also had our written formative assessment of Criteria C and D based on paragraph and dialogue writing.
Hindi Phase 3
Under our current unit, we discussed the relation between language, empathy and inclusive society. We learnt a new concept through various means recently. We learnt about the linguistic devices which are used to write a story in order to make our stories more detailed. The linguistic device we learnt was Imagery. Using imagery, we conveyed the look, texture, taste, sound of something we may have felt or seen in a situation. The use of imagery helps the reader build a mental picture. We wrote a story using all kinds of imagery on the topic for our formative assessment. We also participated in a class debate on the topic ‘Can diplomacy and talking solve all issues?’
In the current unit, we have started the revision of vocabulary and expressions by participating in speaking exercises. We deepened our understanding by participating in an activity known as “The job of my dreams”. For this activity we paired up and had to describe the best profession suited for our partner by researching official French sites and referring to a questionnaire provided. It was a really interactive activity, as we learnt numerous verbs and different professions. This activity has helped us in understanding where our speaking and communication skills needed improvement.
This week we watched various videos related to different professions and built our vocabulary. We explored the responsibilities related to jobs and the origins of job stress. We practiced sentence formation using complex structures and conjunctions. We took the unit end summative assessment.
|We started off with criterion B and created sketches of our intended products. A few of us created our designs on a human figure, while others drew independent garment designs. We also started with our design specifications and chose our final design ideas. Overall, after extensive research, we started finalizing our products.
|Last week we all brainstormed and identified what graphics we would like to include in our animation. Based on this, we worked on our criterion B and created design samples for our animation. We are challenging our creative thinking skills to come up with creative designs to match the design specifications.
